Jocelyn, founder of Swimming to Help was recognized by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey as the State's top youth volunteer of 2019 and was awarded a Bronze Distinguished Finalist Medallion for the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards , Additionally, Jocelyn has received the President's Volunteer Gold Service Award in recognition of 250 plus hours of service in one year.
"How do I get swim lessons?" The question asked of Jocelyn by a little girl in Asbury Park, NJ as she made her way to swim practice ignited the foundation of Swimming to Help. This seemingly simple question opened Jocelyn's eyes to the contrast between her life-one in which the water was her second home-and the lives of too many of peers in Asbury Park, NJ, where so many did not even know how to swim and could not afford to learn. Jocelyn was only in 7th grade, but it quickly became her mission to share her love for swimming while providing life-saving skills to those who otherwise would not have access to such lessons.
Our dream is that the fear and danger that comes with the inability to swim will be eliminated for everyone who has the desire to learn to swim, as we teach through our clinics and provide them with the tools they need to enjoy water activities safely.
Jocelyn began by pitching her idea to her family, her swim coach and the head of the Boys & Girls Club in Monmouth County, NJ. Shortly thereafter, Swimming to Help was born. And Jocelyn continued from there, every step bringing with it new challenges and new rewards: piloting a lesson program run entirely by volunteers; recruiting student volunteers and adults to assist with organization and formal establishment of Swimming to Help as a 501c3; convincing local kids to participate; brainstorming, promoting, and executing fundraisers; forming a Junior Executive Board; creating lesson plans for clinics.
Now a 501c3 non-profit organization, Swimming to Help, with its incredible team of volunteers, has taught over 200 children to love the water and swim, from treading water to learning the different swim strokes. The foundation continues to grow and expand, recently adding water safety clinics and touching even more lives.
Swimming to Help, Inc. is a 501c3 Organization (81-4096197)
